The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team might be building a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
