Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, without initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Key events leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected assertions about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
